The thyroid is our gland that takes care of the general metabolism. It stimulates the expenditure of energy to enable it to function to the best of its ability. Hypothyroidism causes metabolism and hyperthyroidism to work at a reduced rate at too high a rate.
Hypothyroidism is the result of low hormone production by the thyroid gland. In Canada, about 1% of adults suffer from hypothyroidism, with women 2 to 8 times more affected than men. The prevalence of the disease increases with age, reaching more than 10% after age 60.
