Melatonin is a substance secreted by the pineal gland. Its secretion is abundant in young people. Its maximum rate is reached at puberty and decreases to reach half towards the fifties, when the gland tends to atrophy and calcify, which could explain in part that the elderly often have poor sleep. Melatonin is also involved in behavioral balance and some mental functions.
